There is a great interest in developing automotive LiDAR without moving parts – solid state LiDAR. After reviewing its basic operation concept, the presentation focuses on the intricacies of light emission and detection. It presents the technical challenges of using VCSELs as the source of light versus edge-emitting lasers, and SPAD arrays in a correlated-detection mode as detectors. The presentation ends with a discussion of VCSEL and SPAD array optimization to improve the performance of a solid-state LiDAR.
